A Day Of Action
“Please Don’t Raise our rent, We can’t afford it,” was the chant yelled by a host of community members and supporters on the first of August as tenants rallied around the Page Mill Properties office in downtown Palo Alto. It has been a summer of action against Page Mill Properties in regards to the unlawful rent increases of residents who stay in these apartment buildings. Summer actions consisted of petitioning, tenants meetings, Rallies and outreaching. YUCA, tenants, and concerned community members have implemented these actions to fight against Page Mill Properties. On August 1st, we all came together and marched from the West Park Apartments to the home office of Page Mill to express our feelings towards the disrespect they are showing to our residents. One tenant said that it wasn’t fair for them to increase the rent because of the living conditions of the buildings. The maintenance is not up to code on the buildings, the water is bad, and there is a severe case of insect infestation in the buildings. “I bet if they lived in those buildings they would not be in the condition they’re in right now,” a member of YUCA states. PMP claims that they are raising the rent to address these issues, issues that should’ve been addressed before the talks of increase. Management seems to be focused on the beautification of the exterior of the buildings rather than the interior. Only time will tell how this struggle will end, but the tenants and community members are far from done. Meetings will still be held and actions will still be taken until Page Mill finally does the right thing or are held accountable for their criminal actions. Stay tuned freedom fighters…
